I talked to Armen at the Biophys Soc. meeting yesterday- The Actvated Q cycle refers to bc1 complex in dark-adapted chromatophores at physiological redox potential, in which one ubiquinol has entered the Qi site and reduced cyt b(H) forming semiquinone, but the electron, repelled by the semiquinone anion, has crossed over to cyt b(H) of the other monomer, leaving oxidized b(H) ferromagnetically coupled to the semiquinone and priming the complex to produce quinol on the first flash.
